Schulz Program Coordinator Wins NATIONAL Marine of the Year

September 25, 2009

On Friday, 7 August 2009 the Marine Corps League ended their week-long Convention at the Khaler Grand Hotel in Rochester, Minnesota with a Grand Banquet. The Banquet was a formal affair in which national officers of the League were installed and after the guest speaker, Lt General Ron Coleman delivered his key note address. The final item that evening is the announcement of the 2009 Marine of the Year.

Each of the 900 local Detachments is encouraged to submit the name of one Marine from their Detachment who epitomizes the principles of the United States Marine Corps and the Marine Corps League. A detailed report of what the Marine has done that would warrant the award is submitted through a very exacting process. During the convention all past Marines of the Year review all the reports and vote on a single Marine.

At the Banquet presentation all past National MOYs are invited to the stage by the president of the MOY Society. The report on the Marine is paraphrased in the third person and then the name is disclosed.

Our Program Coordinator, Jack Dougherty, a Vietnam Veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart was selected as the National MCL Marine of the Year for 2009.
Nationwide there are 76,000 members in the League and no one has ever been selected from the State of Connecticut.
